Pharyngometry

Pharyngometry and rhinometry are advanced diagnostic tools used in the creation of sleep appliances, such as mandibular advancement devices (MADs). Pharyngometry measures the size and shape of the airway from the oral cavity to the trachea, providing detailed information about any obstructions or constrictions that may affect breathing during sleep. Rhinometry evaluates the nasal passages, helping to identify issues like blockages or resistance in nasal airflow. These technologies allow for precise assessment and optimization of the airway, ensuring that the sleep appliance is customized to improve airflow, reduce snoring, and treat sleep apnea effectively.

Oralase

Oralase is a therapy for older children, focusing on enhancing oral muscle function, reducing tension, and improving airway health. It is particularly beneficial for children with breathing issues, sleep-disordered breathing, or developmental concerns related to the mouth and airway. Oralase can help to improve muscle tone and reduce inflammation, aiding in proper growth and overall health.
Both treatments are safe, quick, and highly effective. They provide long-lasting benefits without the need for more invasive interventions, ensuring your child’s oral and overall health is on the right track from an early age.

Nightlase

Nightlase is a proven laser treatment that has shown to reduce snoring by 74%. It enhances the airway by tightening the soft tissues at the top, which helps restructure collagen and increase airway size with no anesthesia and no post-operative pain. Typically, just three 20-minute treatments over a six-week period is all it takes – though many report improvement even after just one treatment! – and results can last for up to one year before retreatment is recommended. It’s safe and highly successful with our patients who are grateful for a better night’s sleep.

Tongue Tie Release

Our experienced team addresses lip and tongue ties, which can impact proper feeding, speech development, and oral function. We employ gentle, minimally invasive techniques with laser therapy to release these ties, promoting optimal growth and development.

What causes sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea often results from tissue obstruction, a misaligned or underdeveloped jaw, or a weak tongue that falls into the airway.
Tissue Obstruction:

In many cases, sleep apnea occurs when soft tissues in the throat, such as the soft palate or uvula, relax excessively during sleep. This relaxation narrows or blocks the airway, disrupting normal breathing patterns. This type of obstruction can lead to what is known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form of the condition.

Misaligned or Underdeveloped Jaw:

Anatomical abnormalities, such as a misaligned jaw, can contribute to sleep apnea. If the jaw is not aligned correctly, it can affect the positioning of the tongue and other soft tissues in the mouth and throat, leading to increased risk of airway obstruction during sleep.

Weak Tongue Musculature:

For some individuals, especially those who sleep on their backs, weak tongue muscles can allow the tongue to relax and fall back towards the throat during sleep. This can partially or fully obstruct the airway, leading to interruptions in breathing.

What are the signs I might have sleep apnea?

Common signs include loud snoring, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, experiencing morning headaches, feeling excessively sleepy during the day, and having episodes of breathing cessation during sleep observed by others.

How do oral appliances treat sleep apnea?

Oral appliances address these issues by slightly advancing the lower jaw and tongue, reducing the risk of airway blockages during sleep. We use pharyngometry, an advanced diagnostic tool, to precisely measure your airway dimensions and determine the optimal position for your appliance. This technology allows us to create a custom-fitted device that maximizes airway space and breathing efficiency. This therapy is especially effective for mild to moderate cases, with the added benefit of being non-invasive and easily adjustable based on pharyngometric measurements.
